Gordon R. Dickson was a fine craftsman and "Home from the Shore" is an example of his original thinking. As pointed out in another review the text of the preface is fairly kluged up, primarily by words jammed together without the appropriate spaces. Certainly an annoying aspect of eBooks in general is the jarring presence of typographical errors; seemingly more frequent than in hard copy versions. However the rather high incidence of typos appears to be limited in this case to the preface, with the main body of the book relatively clean (not perfect but eminently readable).Mr. Dickson tended to include a metaphysical component to his Science Fiction works which posited the potential for humanity to evolve beyond the mental, physical and spiritual limitations that have -- so far -- defined human existence. While this particular story line includes some "fantastical elements" there is an underlying suggestion that some of the things we are looking for in the exploration of outer space may actually be found closer to home, in the ocean. This is especially relevant today in light of recently released findings on the unanticipated deleterious effects of cosmic rays on the human body once we leave the protective envelope of Earth's magnetosphere. Mr. Dickson's suggestion that exploration of the deep sea could go hand in hand with space exploration seems almost prescient. There is at least the potential that a concerted effort toward development of undersea habitations could generate the kind of technological innovations triggered by the Apollo and subsequent space programs.
We may indeed find ways to address the challenges of space exploration through concurrent oceanic research.
At any rate... a fine read.

Home From The Shore Gordon R Dickson 9780441342563 Books Reviews
This is a review of the product, not the content. And specifically this review is based on 's "Look Inside" of the ebook edition published by Start Science Fiction. I can't understand why someone would "publish" something without copyediting it. This would never happen to a print book, because back then you had publishers who put real effort into publishing a quality product. These days they just scan a copy of the print book, and "publish" it without correcting any formatting errors occurring in the scan process. Just a look at the first paragraph reveals more than a dozen errors. Don't waste your time and money buying products from such fly-by-night companies who get ebook reprint rights, scan the book, upload it to , and then charge ridiculous sums and making 90% profit. Another reason to hate ebooks and the companies who "publish" them.
If you have a young person who enjoys science fiction, then let them read this. It's a good book for sparking the imagination. I probably wouldn't recommend this book for anyone under the age of 13. However, like anything else, you need to base your decision upon the maturity of the child your giving this too.
