Castaways of the Flying Dutchman Castaways of the Flying Dutchman Series Brian Jacques Ian Schoenherr Books
This is a book that I will remember always. It is on my 'favorites' list and I recommend it to any avid reader of any age. Brian Jacques has taken the tale of the Flying Dutchman as a base for this story. Neb/Ben is a young lad who rarely knew love or a kind word. He is dumb - unable to speak until he is washed ashore after being swept off the doomed Flying Dutchman. Together with his dog, Den/Ned, Ben travels through history never ageing, helping those in need.Brian Jacques has taken two of Ben's and Ned's adventures and developed the story of the Castaways. The first is rather short, telling how Ben and Ned were washed ashore and rescued by a kind shepherd. Ben has been given the ability to speak and is told by an angel that his mission is to help those in need. He can stay in one place til he hears the sound of a bell, then he and Ned must move on.
The second part of this book is in the 'present' and tells how the travelers help an elderly widow. There is mystery, humor, and excitement as they race against time to save the villagers from the greed of developers. Ben and Ned can communicate through their thoughts and are a formadible team. Ben shows compassion and wisdom beyond his 'years' in dealing with others. My oldest son (19) just completed the book and his only complaint is that he wished that there had been more of the shorter vignettes, rather than one long second story.
I have read all of Brian Jacques books and consider this one of the best. I hope he will develop it into a series as he did the Redwall books.

Castaways of the Flying Dutchman Castaways of the Flying Dutchman Series Brian Jacques Ian Schoenherr Books Reviews
Brian Jacques is one of the best writers around. His books are amazing! I have read 6 Redwall books before and just recently got this one one my . Definitely 5 star!
It’s a little different from the original one I had ( The physical book I mean. The one I had was a tannish color )But all in all it was as expected
I bought the edition in 2012. Love all of Jacques books. This edition is missing pages. At 82% read twice the text stops with no completion. Book moves on to next chapter.
Brian Jacques has been captivating both young and old audiences since he began writing in the 80's, and this work is no different than his Redwall series. In a word excellent! His grasp of times before the modern world coupled with his witty and enveloping tales made for a fun read that always left me hungry for more as I finished the last pages. All this is only tempered by the fact of his untimely death in February of 2011, but we will have to settle with the great legacy with which this wonderful man left us, and the stories he left behind - our only physical hint to the endless imagination of his.
This should have been advertised as a children's story not as a Nautical Historical novel.
I remember this book as being exciting and touching. A wonderful adventure! Perfect for your preteen too )
After reading 22 excellent Redwall novels, I wondered why I have never tried Jacques' Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series. The books sounded interesting enough and different enough from the Redwall ones to get my curiosity up. Sadly, however, I found the book as a whole a bit of a disappointment after all those fun Redwall novels. It is not exactly bad, and the first third of the story is fantastic and got my hopes up. The rest was a massive let down for me though. Of all the neat and interesting things that the boy and his faithful dog (Neb & Den or Ben & Ned) could have been a part of (wars, the forming of the United States, great catastrophes and such) they end up having to save a boring little village from being destroyed because it is built on a large amount of limestone which is wanted to further "progress" which means the erecting of buildings, forming of roads, and further human expansion. Sure the book takes place in the early 1600s and then in the late 1800s and the historical aspects of the story are interesting, but the village section just dragged on and on, plagued with hardly any action, a dull conflict too similar to Hiaasen's Hoot, and riddle and puzzle solving similar to the Redwall books. Even the simple folk's reaction to some of the riddles was expected and annoying. "Well, what do you make of that?" I don't know but I'm sure you will figure it out and save the town in the end. I really want to move on to the Angel's Command, the next book in the series, because my hopes are still high. I see so much potential in this story and I hope that the sequels can do a better job of taking full advantage of the possibilities provided by the character's abilities and destiny.
