After a slow start, I didn't anticipate that the book would suck me in so much. Once I got to know the characters and the story got going, I had a hard time putting it down. In 1978, Patty's mother Lucy is suspected of murder, and Patty must uncover the secrets of Lucy's troubling past to determine whether she is guilty. Lucy was fourteen years old when she and her mother were sent to Manzanar, an internment camp for Japanese-Americans. What they experience there will change them forever. They must endure deprivation, loss, and abuse and go to extremes to defend one other.

Lucy's life is filled with disappointment as she loses everything she has ever known: her family, men she loved, even her beauty. But she is a survivor, and her determination is inspiring. The conclusion offers a few great plot twists and I was really surprised at some of the revelations presented.

Reading what the Americans of Japanese descent had to suffer as a result of a misguided decree is a sad reading but not enough was known of this period and hopefully this mistake won't be repeated. The author wrote not with bitterness but managed a fascinating story which I would recommend as a good reading. Good for a group discussion.
Wonderfully written, the characters are believable and as it moves between the past and present, between the mother's story and the daughter's, a tale is woven that will hook you in chapter one so you cannot put the book down until you get to the surprise twist at the end!
A great read for anyone who is interested in historical fiction and/or mystery.
I enjoyed this revealing look into post-Pearl Harbor times. Showing the impact made on 3 generations of Japanese-American women proved to be a little tricky. Ultimately, I was able to get into the rhythm of the book, and keep the 3 generations sorted out. But I had to back-track more than once to remind myself whether I was reading about the mother, the grandmother, or the daughter. The book gave good insight to how America's response to Pearl Harbor affected the lives of Japanese-Americans. It's a part of our history about which I knew very little. I recommend the book.
This is a novel based on a little known historical event in WWII. In the United States all the Japanese people were removed from their homes, included those who were U.S. Citizens, and put into internment camps. This fictional account is told from the perspective of a child. My eyes generally glaze over historical books. Not this one. It was a moving, fast paced fictional account. I read this over a few days despite my busy schedule.
This is an excellent book, which "feels" so real. A young woman and her mother are relocated to Manizar, a Japanese camp near Lone Pine, California. Her family was quite wealthy, which plays a small role. She comes of age, finds a first love and experiences horrific situations there. The story is told between her voice and her daughters. The ending is quite different, which was a surprise. One important thread throughout is her survival and her strength.
I have to admit I was a little upset by the end of this book. While the characters of Lucy and Jesse were sympathetic, I don't agree with the way they tried to seek justice. That said, this is an interesting book which is apparently well-researched. As an American who had limited knowledge of the internment camps, I found the historical fiction very compelling. I was so disturbed by this book that at times I had to put it down to catch my breath.

Lucy and her mother are taken to Manzanar - a camp that had been constructed for Japanese Americans. What they had to endure was appalling and cruel. Near the end of the book, I thought there was an error in the printing but this author's writing is excellent and I couldn't imagine her getting this one paragraph wrong. I had to reread it 3 times till it sunk in and just threw me for a loop. I LOVED this book and hope you make an effort to read it. It won't disappoint plus you learn so much history from it plus it's an emotional roller coaster. AWESOME
