Sugar Plum Ballerinas #1 Plum Fantastic Whoopi Goldberg Deborah Underwood Maryn Roos Books Reviews
Fun book for my 6 year old. She loved the familiar characters.
There are many kids' books out there about ballerina wannabes, but this one, by Whoopi Goldberg and Deborah Underwood, features an interesting twist--the girl in question would really much rather skate, but is pushed into ballet by her mother. Alexandrea Petrakova Johnson, despite her name, is not at all the tutu and leotard type, but reluctantly agrees to give ballet school a try after she moves with her single mother from Georgia to New York City.
It's very difficult at first, but with the help of her mother and friends she gradually comes to improve at and enjoy ballet, along the way giving an unexpected boost to her mother's career. Should appeal to many preteen girls.
Little advanced for my 8 yr old granddaughter, but by Summer she will be reading at this level... She is in 2nd Grade...
Can’t give it five stars because I didn’t read it—gift for a young girl. Purchased because it had positive African-American girl protagonists.
I purchased Sugar Plum Ballerinas books 1-5 as a gift for my 8yr old daughter who loves ballet. As an African-American parent, I want to provide my child with as many positive images of herself as possible. The book has age-appropriate language that will keep the targeted audience engaged. Many times I walk past her room and see her laying on her bed laughing or commenting to herself because of something she just read.
At least twice a week, one of her homework assignments is "Reading Log" where she picks her book reads two chapters and responds to specific questions from the story. Each time she picks "Sugar Plum Ballerinas" and I am jumping for joy. Since she started elementary school getting her to read beyond when it was required for a homework assignment was a battle.
I've already ordered the final book in the series. While I'm sad to see the series end I am grateful these books have given my daughter the confidence, desire, and love for reading.
Perfect book included a ballerina Barbie and the choice was perfect. The little girl who received was ecstatic !
I like that Alexandra met new people who spoke other languages. It has parts that were funny, embarrassing, weird, and beautiful. It talked about teamwork, friendship, and bullying. She moves to NY from a small town and learns about being the new girl in ballet class. I recommend and would really like to read more books in the series. -Alonna (7 y/o)
