I have loved this book for over 50 years. I bought it while in college because I love poetry. As my children grew, I would read to them at bedtime from this book. I would sit on the floor between the boys room and the girls room to read their favorites then a new one each evening. When they were grown and began having families of their own, I searched on amazon to see if by some chance it was still in print. It was! I bought five copies, one for each of my children. It was shipped directly to each of them. My oldest son, who was working in the publishing industry at the time, made a derogatory remark about the dust jacket but his wife was startled when he shouted, "It's the bedtime book!" He called me and left a message on the answering machine when he knew I would not be home. He read the entire Belinda poem much to the amusement of his wife. This copy was a gift for a good friend who will be caring for her grandchildren for a month this fall.

This volume was ordered simply because it contained a favorite childhood poem by Eugene Field. I was totally unprepared for, and delighted by, the huge collection of tasteful poetry contained in it, which while suitable for children, is really for the world at large. The volume, printed in a clear, concise format, contains of course all the old favorites by Shelly and Stevenson, but includes so many more authors, with Shakespeare and even a few literary passages from the Bible thrown in occasionally.
One of my pet peeves in life is with modern literature formats and the cheesy, or worse, illustrations presented to children as art. This book actually had quite acceptable, pleasing line drawings placed sparingly at the head of each long chapter - I found myself smiling at this art. The poems speak for themselves, and should be in every home.
I couldn't find my review of this delightful book (had forgotten the name or author and wanted to buy another one) under my name (review just says it was written by A Customer - "I LOVE this children's poetry book - it's PURE nostalgia!!!" in 1997). But I FINALLY stumbled across it - again.
At last I have a grandchild in 4th grade with a 10th birthday coming up. This will be a perfect gift book. She's become an avid reader. I think she'll enjoy this introduction to poetry (although she's probably already had some poetry in school). This book has my favorite scary poem from my childhood "Little Orphant Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley. The book I purchased in 1997 was gifted to another child, and I'm delighted to find this wonderful book is still in print! There are over 700 well-known poems in it - a bargin. It most certianly has something in it beloved by most every purchaser and great to be shared with children.
I love this book! The poems are all inspiring, and thoughtful (not Shel Silverstein.)I home school and we read these at lunch. My kids request them. We also love gyo fujikawa's 101 poems for children. These are my 2 favorites.
My mother read this book to me when I was a toddler. "The Tale of Custer the Dragon" was a favorite. My sons have grown up hearing and then reading the poetry and every one of them have used this book in their various school projects. When they left home they each received a copy. I have the original that my mother read to me but it has been loved to death. There was a particular fall poem I wanted to read my youngest granddaughter who is 2 1/2 and realized it was time to get another one. I'm so happy I can order it here. She was just as delighted with Custer as I was. The imagery evoked by the poetry apparently lasts at least one lifetime.
This book has a special place in my heart. It was the book from which my father read to me as a child. I have bought this book for each of my own two children, and it is my go-to gift for new parents. This book contains everything from Ogden Nash, to Lewis Carroll, to Robert Frost, to HW Longfellow, to William Blake, and everything in between. It's the kind of book that will last a lifetime - with poems appropriate for the youngest child, to the oldest adult. It's a great and wonderful book.
WHEN MY BROTHER AND I WERE LITTLE OUR MOM BOUGHT THIS SAME BOOK OF FAVORITE POEMS OLD AND NEW BUT THE COVER WAS BROWNISH GRAY. AND HAD A DRAWING OF A BOY AND GIRL READING AT THEIR SCHOOL DESKS, BUT IT HAS A BRAND NEW COVER THE ILLUSTRATES IN THE BOOK ARE THE SAME ALL THE POEMS ARE THE SAME. WE LOVED OUR FIRST COPY OF IT TO DEATH WE HAD READ AND LOVED AND ENJOYED IT SO MUCH THAT THE OUTSIDE COVERS CAME OFF THAT ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS THE BYING AND PAGES . WE KEPT THAT BOOK FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS. AND I HAD BEEN WANTING TO BUY A NEW COPY I HAD SEEN IT IN THE OLD B ROWN COVER AT TWO LOCAL BOOK STORES BUT FORGOT TO BUY IT. I AM SO VERY HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE A NEW COPY OF IT.
This is a wonderful poetry book to have! It is full of SO MANY great poems. We borrowed it from the library but quickly realized we needed to purchase our own copy. There aren't many illustrations, but the few that there are are simple and beautiful. There are multiple indexes titles, first lines, and authors. The poems are arranged by topic, as indicated in the Contents. My children love to flip through the book and find random new poems.
